This site should have post ranks. Like once you get to a certain amount of posts you should go up a rank. Or for making smart posts an admin could let you go up a rank. Does anybody else like this idea?

I don't like the idea of post ranks, I think they are kind of pointless and they don't really determine anything, it's more fun to make your own user title than to have one you don't get to choose.

Ditto.

Post ranks would also probably cause competition between members, racing to see who can get the highest rank first, and spam the place up, in the process. It's just not worth it.

exactly.
Post ranks will just spam up the whole board, if not already spammed up.

I also don't like the idea. What up having post ranks anyway? To superior in the bored or something?
I think it's pointless. :P

No. They would override our spiffy user titles.

Right. Don't we have enough problems with people spamming for gil? :P

What is really all that appealing about a high post count? It's really just pretty stupid.
But I used to be a flooder back in the day, too, so I guess that I shouldn't be talking.

I've seen forums do that, where the 'Registered User' default title was replaced with different levels until the user had enough money for a custom title. It's probably not too hard to add, but I rather like my custom title. I'd be for it if it didn't replace it.

I don't know. It would give the poster a false sense of prestige, I think. This forum probably doesn't need that.

Forget the post ranks. Why would you care about your rank if you have Gil anyway?

Now I shall join everyone in condemning the first idea - having ranks for your post count is a bad idea and will start producing people who merely post to see their count rise yet further.
Yet the second idea I have seen implemented successfully before. At a previous forums there was the practice of 'kudos points,' and basically if anyone made a particularly helpful or insightful post - they would be awarded a point.
They were extremely hard to receive - and it would be rare for any member to ever have more than say 20. And then perhaps you could use these rare points to buy stuff - yet it would be independent of the gil system (probably buying different items to avatars and the like – yet what I don’t know) - so you would have both running in parallel.
Or, alternatively, a user wouldn't be able to buy stuff with his points and would merely be able to show them off for prestige (which obviously wouldn't override the user-titles - but is a bit vain,) - yet it might spur people on to try and make more intelligent posts. I'm not sure that such a system would fit here, but I have seen it work before.

We had that type of thing before, that crappy "reputation points" junk.
Didn't do well, mainly people bugging out saying "Can you raise my rep a point?!?"
I say we're fine as-is.

I suppose that I assumed that people would be better than that. Oh well - in that case then I would agree and say that things should just stay as they are.

Love that idea, I don't like it when people make unintelligent posts... even though I've done it before :P

I think post ranks sound alright, but after seeing what jip and Shned had to say, couldn't agree with them more.

Yeah after seeing what all you said I have changed my mind. Just having the custom user title is fine. Thanks for all your replys! :)

You know, there is always this option which is currently turned off.
Although it is a new feature, us staff would like to lay down some simple rules about User Reputations. These are intended to be fun for users to play with, but they can be given negatively, too. By having this feature turned on, you are agreeing to tolerate all results of people giving positive or negative reputations. Reputations are given anonymously, therefore it makes them incredibly difficult to monitor. The staff may not be able to prevent misuse of this system. Therefore, if you think you may not be able to handle another user abusing this system against you, please turn this feature off.

Yes, definitely. And about the reps, I hope they stay turned off, due to the fact that they're anonymous. So people could go really badly in reps by just one person (I think)

The only reason they disagree is the threat of loosing are Custom Titles. If they wernt at risk we would probebly agree.

Yes, that user reps thing would cause too much potential for messy things here.

I disagree with you. I'm opposing the idea of post ranks because it will attract too many spammers and other weird people. We're rather unique just because of the fact that our forums don't have any post ranks. Why shall we go with the flow?

Exactly. Also, post ranks make people feel superior. For example, I have more posts than Bjoern, so my rank would be higher. But that doesn't mean I'm better. He's been here about 2-3 years longer than me.

I wouldnt like that thing about the reps. It would be too much work for all the forum leaders and would be more trouble than it is worth.

Well, I don't like the fact that the amount of Gil that one recieves is directly linked to how many posts one makes. That's definitely caused spammers here before. We should come up with an alternative.
