Another one of those "Which _____ do you prefer?..." threads, I'm sorry.
Which world map did you find the best/enjoyable to navigate and live out of all the Final Fantasies to date?
Personally, I'm going for IX. VII's was a little too small or in some cases outright pointless expanses of desert/rocks, VIII's was a little too harsh on the travel aspect because of the masses of water and continent break ups etc, but IX got it right imo. It just seemed to be big enough to have a good explore/fly around, and I wasn't disappointed by the variety in the landscape either. Music was great until you hit Disc 4 - hated that "do-do-do-do."

Thats my favorite too I dont know why I like it but i just do. I did not really like 7 and what i hated on ff10 you cant fly an airship around.

The one where America is in the middle, because it's obviously the only one that makes sense.
Oh wait. You meant Final Fantasy. Um. 9. k.

... yes Tim :P
Anyways, as much as I completely agree with everything Roger said, I still think that FFVIII has a charm about it. I think it's just heaps good, although everything was so far apart, it just seemed right.
... Or maybe I just enjoyed flying the Ragnarok over the water lots.

I like the FF VIII Map above most others, Mainly due to the spacing of the towns and places, and the overall structure.
It really felt like a world I could travel in, and I liked it most of all for the fact that there was some form of town on each land mass, and if not that, some place to actually visit.
Most other games seem to lack that, I find FF IX's Map to be boring as one continent has so many towns, gates, etc..well, most others have barely any place(s) to visit minus places you have to go to do something to further the game.
Another Map I like is the FF X one, That really did have that world to travel in feel as there was a major amount of towns, ruins, areas, etc...to travel on and fight monsters in. A definite contender in the overall scheme of things, World Map Wise.

Hmmm...This would be a hard one.
VIII was good because it's, I feel, probably the most accurate to a real world as you would probably get out of all the FFs. The only problem with it was that the Ragnarok needed a fair speed boost. You'd think for a spaceship it would be capable of more speed.
IX was nice for all the different mountains and such and actually provided a use for reefs and shelfs besides blocking your submarine (I'm looking at you VII!).
But for me, I think I'm going to have to go with a tie between VI and X. VI was absolutely massive and had an Airship thats speed was capable for it as well as having a nice spacing on the towns. X gets a mention because it's actually a world map that makes sense. I'm glad they removed the "oh there's a town! we'll just walk up to it an press X to go inside!" It made the game feel more natural.

FFVII's map was okay, but not overly great. Could have been a lot better in my opinion, but then again served it's purpose I guess.
FFVIII's map I liked better than FFVII's. Can't really say what I like more about it, maybe the whole structure in general. But I'm sure I somehow got stuck once on the world map and had to restart =/ Or maybe I dreamed that, but I'm sure it happened!
FFIX's map I think I liked best. Just overall a nice structure. Not much more I can add there
FFX's map I also liked, but would have been nice to actually fly the airship around the world.

My favorite map, is from VI, with VIII's being a very close second. I don't know, It just seems I would spend days wandering VI's map. And the fact that everything changes after Kefka's day of fun so you got to relearn where everything was (or was not.) VIII's being second, though I remember spending days trying to find that stinking boat. Oh how I cursed the game.
However, I am NOT a fan of XII's map. Granted, I'm not that far into it, but I don't think there is very much free roaming as per previous FF's.

I rather liked IX's map, but im going oldschool and saying I's map, simply because I know where everything is.

I prefer X and XII's maps because the traveling is seamless between new places.
In the older games the world maps always seemed like a break from the action and the story.

I have to say that this is a tough Question but VIII's map wouled have to be my favorite. I agree with Aerther, the distance between continent's made it seem more real, I love it & I just love to fly round it in the ragnarok. That ship is just so cool, it's a dragon YAY, & the closest thing to rideing a dragon short of summoning Bahamut for a lift ????????????? Hmmmmmmm that couled be fun *starts to daydream*

FF9 FTW. :P
Mostly because I just like that world as a whole, but I also love the way it's laid out with the four different continents and each of them having such distinct atmospheres, as well as the outlying islands you can visit.
FF6 comes in close second, simply because I like the way it changes after it's Kefkafied. XD

there was good points to every map(well most of em anyway)for example 8 was much more realistic 7 didnt just have placed where you had to go e.g.materia caves cactuar island and 9 had the cool vehicles and lots of hidden stuff dead pepper treasures (dont think thats a very good reason)
