Inspired by my recent playthrough of Final Fantasy X. I had forgotten much of the later stages of the game and was not entirely sure what to expect from some of the bosses - however, I was convinced I was going to struggle with Yunalesca. In reality, I took her out on my first attempt, without ever having two KOed party members or switching anyone out.

Ditto with Yunalesca. Though I also find it that when you play different times through it varies. Maybe that's just me?

Final Fantasy VIII, Adel, was really a shocker to me. I remember when I was little and my brother struggled really long and hard defeating her, so when I played the game through a few years later I remember preparing everything I could, and then the battle ended up being as easy as pie. I think I was actually more disapointed.

Then there's the entire Soulcage thing in Final Fantasy IX... You'd think for a boss that seemed to be at least a little significant in the game that you would have to do more than just Phoenix Down him.

Hardest boss I was surprised with? Final Fantasy IX's Ozma. What a bitch. I went in there thinking I was all high and mighty and not only did he shoot my ego and pride but he raped my party while doing it. XD Totaly didn't see that one comming.

First time I played through FFVIII, Adel creamed me. I was way underlevelled and had to go back to the very start of the game due to where I saved. That and Omega Weapon - easy never even comes into the equation.

Surprisingly hard was Evrae on the approach to Bevelle in FFX. Possibly the hardest compulsory boss in the game for the level I was at. Also incredibly easy was Yu Yevon. All you had to do was cast Reflect on him and sit back and watch him kill himself with his Gravity attacks.

I suppose as with any game, if you know the trick, they're easy to beat.

Yunalesca was incredibly easy the first time I played, it was just a long, tedious march through her various stages until she finally died. On my next play-through though it took several attempts.. probably because I was expecting it to be as easy as I 'remembered'. Meh, maybe first time was lucky.

Seymour was a complete and utter bitch, however. When you fight him at Mt. Gagazet... that was one of the few times I'd almost lobbed my controller at something. Probably one of the most frustrating boss battles for me.

Oh, and Elder Wyrm from XII comes a close second. Apparently there was a way to skip the sod..

I'm finding it hard to remember some of the bosses, man it's been a long time since I played through an FF. I sense a nostalgic FFIX playthrough coming up =o

Ozma was a pain in the ass, but put some Absorb Dark and some status protects on, and there was really nothing to panic about.

I actually found Evrae hard as well, being pretty undeveloped in the sphere grid department at that point in the game. Al Bhed Potions were your saving grace though, so as long as Rikku kept ticking, you weren't too bad.

Adel. Adel, Adel, Adel. That is all.

As for easy, yeah, Yu Yevon was a piss take. With last bosses like that, I expected some pwnage, controller throwing moments, not infinite auto life.

Evrae is a tie between easy and hard for me. One time through I completely annihilated him. Every other time he wiped me out. Badly.

Also got beat around by Yunalesca the first time I fought her. Then I figured out that all I had to do is get my Aeon's overdrives and she went down like nothing I've ever seen before.

Yu-Yevon...man. I think that after making you spend so much time leveling up your Aeons only to kill them in the end, Square just decided to give you a break with this guy. I mean, your entire party gets Auto-Life. There's no way you can lose that battle.

Yu Yevon isn't a real boss, though. He's like the very last Sephiroth battle in FFVII. He just doesn't count.

Adel is still the boss that gave me the most trouble in my first playthrough of an FF game, but I don't know if it was all that surprising. I mean, the battle's very near the end of the game... I think the most surprisingly hard battle must have been Evrae. FFX had been quite easy up to that point, and then the game suddenly throws an actually challenging boss at you without any warning. I didn't see that coming. Also, many of the bosses in FFXII surprised me. Especially Cid.

The most surprisingly easy boss must be Dyne in FFVII. By the time you fight him, you've already put quite a few hours and many bosses behind you. Who expected a boss at that stage of the game to be that easy? I guess it depends on Barret's level, but even characters who aren't in your party gain EXP, so you'd have to be seriously underleveled to have any kind of problem defeating Dyne on your first attempt...

Edit: Forgot about Ozma. He was probably the most surprisingly easy for me, really. I defeated him with a party at levels 55-60 in about 5 attempts. Not a very impressive "superboss"...
