Let battle commence...

Welcome to the Grand Final of Survivor: Battle of the Decade!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v159/Daviace/logo_battle_600w_v4_465x3001.png

Begins: 11pm, 19th March 2010
Ends: 11pm, 22nd March 2010

And so here we are. After a nearly six week journey that has endured rounds as vibrant as cabbage soup and enjoyed rounds as epic as the title demands, we are just mere moments away from the final battle in which one game will stand tall and forever be known as the greatest role playing game of the last decade. But which two titles will be duking it out?

Eviction Votes

Mass Effect - 7
Final Fantasy IX - 1
Knights of the Round - 1

Immunity Votes

Knights of the Round - 3
Final Fantasy IX - 1
Mass Effect - 1

I wish there was some way for me to spin this as a surprising result, but it seems that everyone knew who was going to be falling out of the race long before this commentary was posted. As Aether put it, "Is it really a bandwagon when there's really no choice on what has to go now?" I'm thinking not.

In fact, it would seem that most people think everything about the upcoming finale is a foregone conclusion - though, of course, they couldn't agree on what that foregone conclusion actually was. First we had Beastly who considers the result to be so obvious that he doesn't think "immunities matter now". In that respect, you couldn't be more wrong. See the Miscellaneous Business below to find out just how important your Immunity vote is.

Then there was DreamLines (who returned to the game with a triumphant "GENIUS!! BRILLIANT!!" when he saw that Final Fantasy XII had been evicted, a result he pinned entirely on his decision to " refrain from voting in the round") who was "willing to wager that" it would actually be the second of the two finalists that would take the crown.

But I am getting ahead of myself. Before we can find out which game is going to win, we have to officially find out who is leaving us. For that we can look to votes by the likes of Sam, the effect of which is that we must part ways with...

Odin Sphere
Tales of Symphonia
Fallout 3
Persona 4
World of Warcraft
Tales of Vesperia
Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth
Star Ocean: Til the End of Time
Eternal Sonata
Golden Sun: The Lost Age
Dragon Age: Origins
Golden Sun
Chrono Trigger DS
Lost Odyssey
Kingdom Hearts II
Final Fantasy XII
Mass Effect

And before we go any further than that, it is time for the penultimate look at

The Predictions

Which game will be in third position?

Mig and Dedrus are taking the points this time, with the scores now looking like this

Aether – 6
BZero – 4
Dedrus - 3
Lord DB - 4
Mig - 7
Not Miko - 4
Roger - 5
Sioux – 2

We should also take a moment to consider the last Question - "What was the best RPG of the 1990's?"

For Ridley, the answer was certainly obvious - "Secret of Mana, no doubt. Amazing gameplay, amazing story, amazing music... just plain, well, amazing". Magus was equally as confident about his choice, but "It's easily Chrono Trigger for me. I know I'm pretty shameless about hyping it up, but I still love the game, years after I first played it."

Both games were mentioned by Sioux, but he couldn't quite decide between "Mario RPG, Secret of Mana, and Chrono Trigger. All three brought RPG changing game mechanics to the table and each had an excellent story line", while Mig was torn between two possibilities before settling on "Pokémon Blue, just because that was probably the game that got me into this particular genre.. although it is pretty loosely labelled as an RPG."

As for BZero, there was apparently no doubt in his mind that it was "Final Fantasy VII". Simples.

And now we have your final new

Being the last survivors of their tribes and humanity(that they know of) they're beckoned after meeting in the cavernous sewers of the city to travel to various locations of their world through a variety of means. In each place they meet actual spiritual embodiments of the major deities from each tribe. These embodiments will communicate, test, battle, empower and ultimately lead this motley crew of survivors to their eventual destiny.

As mentioned already, we do have some

Miscellaneous Business

- The tradition is to do away with Eviction and Immunity Votes in favour of simply voting for who you want to win. This time, however, we are only doing away with Eviction - the winner will be decided by Immunity votes. It basically amounts to the same as a vote for who you want to win, but it means the two remaining Heroes can grant each finalist an extra point each. That also doesn't make much difference, except for me to crown the most successful Hero in the Results. So yeah, only Immunity votes count.

- Another tradition is that the Final runs for 3 rather than 2 days and that tradition stands. However, because that means it will end at 11pm, 22nd March 2010 and I do not finish work until that exact moment, I will post the Results the next day.

- I usually only mention people that have actually voted in the write-up, but I found it intriguing that Roger didn't use his Mass Effect hero vote - it would have saved the game.

- Oh, and if "No Final Fantasy XII = no Dedrus" you have to wonder how he existed before 2006.

Here are the finalists;

Final Fantasy IX
Knights of the Old Republic

I'll see you at the Results ceremony at 11pm, 23rd March 2010 - and as was written in the ancient scrolls of years gone by, "be there or be a regular quadrilateral!"

Eviction: Final Fantasy IX

Immunity: Knights of the Old Republic

I don't know if voting eviciton and immunity matters here but meh, can't hurt :p

QotR coming later

Ah damn, i only just understood that paragraph XD
Still counting that?

Ridley

Immunity: Final Fantasy IX

Why? Simple. KOTOR was built on top of a giant canon as far as storyline was concerned. FFIX had to do everything from scratch like most Final Fantasy games, but was able to cater itself to both new and older gamers looking for their nostalgia. Personally in my Top 3 favorite Final Fantasy games.

QotR: antman saves child from burning building, Sam gets caught under fallen timber.

I dunno.

Favorite P-C RPG: Sam's, because it made me giggle with glee.

Sioux
Mar 20, 2010, 09:31 AM
I, Sioux, am the Hero of the Knights of the Old Republic and grant it my protection!

It has helped flesh out the past in the Star Wars Expanded Universe and has created precedent for more and more quality Star Wars games to be created. The game helped in birthing an entire new type of RPG and has left its mark on the gaming world with its innovative game play and game creation process. I think it easily qualifies for a place in the Survivor's pantheon.

QotR:

What headlines would Survivor: Battle of the Decade have produced?

Fallout 3 falls out fast!

The Golden Sun has set!

Some Sonatas are never Eternal...

These Tales have ended.

Won't this Fantasy ever end!?

Can this antman get any wittier?

What the hell is Persona 4?

That'll do.

Essentially, what is your favorite player created RPG?

Sam's. Sam Jackson usually makes everything better...unless its a movie where snakes are on a plane. Jesus Christ that movie was awful.

Lord DB

Immunity: Final Fantasy IX

Why did I vote this way? Simple: FFIX has been much more of a "contestant" than KOTOR has. It has struggled quite a bit to get where it is, and which is why I consider it a real "survivor". KOTOR, on the other hand, hasn't really contributed to the game until the last couple of rounds; it has more or less just sat on the sidelines watching the other games get evicted. So in short:KOTOR doesn't deserve to win.

BZero

Immunity: Final Fantasy IX

Immunity: Final Fantasy IX

I mean, isn't that why we all showed up here in the first place anyway?

Except maybe all you youngins.

Also: Shame on you, Aeth. Fallout 3 was an excellent excuse for me procrastinate when it came out. Good times...

Aether

FFIX had to do everything from scratch like most Final Fantasy games

I'm sorry but what? Have you never played any Final Fantasy Previous to it? That was one of the big reasons some critics blasted it with low low scores - it wasn't original. But I digress...

Immunity: Knight Of The Old Republic

Final Fantasy IX already won a survivor (or a part of it did anyway) I believe a while ago.

QotR: Headline...?

Fallout 3 falls out!

lawlz

Favourite PC-RPG: Mig's because like everyone, I always like to play the villan :D

Ridley

I don't really know where you're taking your scores from, because both games have the same score on Metacritic. Regardless, KOTOR was a licensed game, and appealed itself towards the science-fiction crowd. So in a way, it may be comparing apples to oranges, but I enjoyed FFIX because for me, the much more upbeat story had me far more interested.

Final Fantasy IX got rid of the boring emo characters and brought in Zidane. I felt that the characters were more memorable, a more interesting artistic design, and a stronger climax. Not to mention, it brought us Tetra Master.

And yes, I have played the previous Final Fantasy games. VI is my #3 favorite title, but it came out during the Clinton era, so that doesn't count here for obvious reasons. I still feel it very much stands alone like most of the other FF games.

That's all the inspiration I need.

I, Mig, am the Hero of the Final Fantasy IX and grant it my protection!

QotR: Brain fried from too much literature coursework.. originality is lacking. That's not a headline, it's an excuse, err, reason. >_>

I'll go ahead and vote for Sioux, just because it actually sounds like quite a decent idea for an RPG. And of course added brownie points for being one of only two people to actually answer all the QotRs on it.

Magus

Immunity: Final Fantasy IX

Basically what Ridley said. Final Fantasy IX had the failure of VIII to recover from, while KotOR was riding on the Star Wars license.

DreamLines

KOTOR - and I had a whole epic post lined up as to why. Given that I also love FFIX. Essentially I hadn't even heard of KOTOR before the competition started and it has since been responsible for getting me back into video games - but it wouldn't have changed the outcome anyway.
