I've yet to listen to all of Ascendancy, though what I've heard is great!
I was just kind of suprised when I listened through The Crusade, 'cos most of what people had told me was that it was.. well, awful. They lied!
I mean sure it's different to EtI and Ascendancy, but it's still a great album nonetheless.

The problem with the Crusade is that it sounds like Trivium-tallica.. complete with some quite cheesy lyris. I mean, fantastic album, but not their best by a long shot. That's why I was so happy that The Crusade actually sounded like Trivium - unique, and awesome.

Shame Broken One didn't actually make it on The Crusade.. beats a few of the songs that did into the ground. Bass intro/outro = :D.

Well technically it's just Hansi from BG and Jon Schaffer from IE and some random drummer, the rest of the bands aren't involved - BUT, I can see why you'd say it so. Hansi has such a distinctive voice, I've been able to pick him out in a variety of cameo lines in most songs he's done for other bands. And speaking of Demons & Wizards, I love the style of sound they create, shame they haven't released anything for about 5 years now.

I agree, too. I hated SAF. They've definitely matured, but this album has a much more commercial feel to it at the same time...the riffs aren't as complex in my opinion. But no matter, "Your Betrayal" is still one of my top songs. And given the fact I can actually play it on my guitar, that makes it even better to me.

But as DeeDee said, it's still not The Poison. haha.

Oh how I love this song. If there were any one example of a perfect song, it would be this one right here. And the fact it's 23 minutes long just makes it even better, because it's not repetitive at all. Ahhhh, Dream Theater, you amaze me.

However, I was suprised when Portnoy left the band, and is more than likely to be a permanent drummer of Avenged Sevenfold.

But I think it might be a good thing to get one of the old guys out, and some new influence in, because these latest albums have been really, really similar in tone. It's getting boring.

And I think Portnoy will go back, but not for at least two years off on his own doing other stuff (like A7X right now) first.

But I agree. I love all of their more recent albums, but there really isn't much differentiation between them all. I mean, in the 90's there were OBVIOUS differences between each album. "Images" had a fantastic prog-rock sound. "Awake" got a bit heavier (my only gripe with that album was Portnoy's annoyingly 'clicky' snare drum, which sadly carried over to "A Change of Seasons"). "Falling Into Infinity" may not be regarded as their best work, but that had awesome and unique sound to it, too, and I loved that album. "Trial of Tears" was phenomenal. Then "Scenes From A Memory" came along. Such a great album, but nothing at all like any of the albums that preceded it.

The thing is since Portnoy produced the last few albums, he pretty much took over as far as the overall direction of the albums would go. And none of them were bad, by any means, but Portnoy is just so stuck on morphing DT into a heavy metal band instead of letting them shine at what they truly do best. When every single band member collaborates the albums turn out spectacular. But Portnoy hasn't been letting that happen.
