The family guess has always been he did it because he saw that it was a family blood feud thing, it would last forever and ever as long as that other family or group had people in it so he nipped them all in the bud instead of leaving them for us to deal with down the road.

This doesn't necessarily mean they were in fact trying to hurt the family as a whole nor does it mean they were going after individual members either.
