Prep, goth, skater, greb, sharon, barry,- so many labels, but do they mean anything?

(yes, this could equally be in D&D- but- meh, so could anything).

You may not know the title of "barries" and grebs, but I can define it succintly. A barry is someone who dresses in the same clothes as everyone else- conforms. A greb is someone who mocks the conformist, then dresses in the same clothes as the other grebs.

Oh, and could someone explain to me what a prep is?

Anyways, would you categorise yourself as one of the above- or do you consider yourself above labels?

Personally I like to think I am- indeed I think most people are- people are too complex to shove into one big group- I mean I might be a "nerd" as I am quite academically able- but then I listen to rock and indie music, so I might be more of a "greb" (greb is sort of nu goth, in that you can listen to any music). But then I mostly wear barry clothing. In the end, should we define our world into these weird divisions?

My world is far more simple- it goes gits and non-gits. Cut and dry. Or so you might think. . . .

Preps are the ones who wear grandma sweaters and dockers. They hand around 1 person, you know like a ring leader. I don't think I fit anywere, I am in a group all my own, but at lunch before my friend who is the singer in a death metal band grunted at this prep who walked by and this little dude pratically ran away in fear. I got a good laugh, but it probobly wasn't a nice thing to do. My friends are nerds and punks, I don't know where I fit. I guess geek? Hemmmmm Some people think I am stupid singing the Thermos song in class and other sing along. It's wayyyyyyy too complicated.

Labels are handy-dandy little things to avoid thinking too hard about the people you meet in the streets, at school, whatever. If you can pidgeonhole them into a single word category, you don't have to worry that they might be people, might have feelings, etc. You only have to decide your simple feelings towards that group and bingo! Instant opinion, without all that tedious 'getting to know them' or 'giving them the benefit of the doubt.'

....OK, enough sarcasm. Labels...I've never agreed with them. Those categories..they're purely artificial distinctions, and artificial discrimination, based on what people look like. They're an excuse to put in place of thinking. Me, I'm studious..ish. p So that makes me a nerd. And I listen to rock and indie. So I'm a greb. And my clothes shift between black and white, pretty much, so I'm...what? Semi-goth? Proto-goth? Visgoth?

I just don't believe in those categories. They're mostly used as insults, by members of other categories, and tend to carry negative connotations with them. I know someone who probably thinks of themself as a greb, and whenever they say 'barries,' they literally spit the word out. Anything which adds to animosty between people is a bad thing...and that, for me, includes these labels. Burn 'em and live free! Live the No Logo way!

I kind of fall into the categiry of "semi-popular". I'm friends with some of the popular people, but most of them don't like me. I don't really care what it is though. It doesn't make a difference in my life!

Labels can be fun - having different categories of people is a tribal tradition which dates back to prehistoric times. Everyone needs someone to regard as the enemy whether its a certain political group, teachers, parents or people who dress differently to yourself. Harmless fun really.

I'll be happy wearing anything so long as it has a Sanrio character on it! Can someone suggest anywhere to get Sanrio clothing/accessories from anywhere in England (preferebly South Yorkshire)?

My best friend Kirsty is a skater and I thought about going thatc way, but I dunno, I don't think it'd suit me.

My opnion in these matters relates to the insecurities of the individual. If that person feels like they are left out of society then they try anything possible to fit in. This is true for any type of catagory...

As for your own classification, I think that it depends on your attitude. Your parents raise you to be like them, and tell you to be who you really are, but some people who don't like the idea, they try to be different. People who are brought up in unstable families tend to be rebellious because they didn't get the love and care as a younger child, so they become independant.

Those who want to stand out are making a statement, whatever the statement is, it all depends on the person making it. I feel that we do these things for our own securities or lack there of and want to be recognized by society and be someone who can change a life (whether it being thier own or someone elses).

Alright, this post is long already so I'll be brief... I consider myself as someone who is and individual, but doesn't want to be recognized as one. I go to a preppy school in Chattanooga, TN yet I'm not a preppy person at all, I just live my life how I think it should be lived, caring about myself and others close to me, and preparing myself for the road ahead of me...

So, now that I've said that do you think I'm sentimental or mushy, if you do think again, it's just how I see things in perspective with the world.

Are you kidding me?! At least where I live, preps are defined as cheerleaders, football players, and other popular people (people who wear preppy clothes). My old school was literally 98.9% preps, but my new school has some variations. It's mostly nerds, ghetto people (sorry I don't know what to call them), a very few preps, a few skaters and punks, and some undistinguishable people. It's not just what you wear, but the way you act, the things you say, and your attitude. I guess I'm a prep, but I'm friends with some punks and skaters...

A prep is basically someone who judges other people only by their clothes, usually girls (and for some reason they are usually "popular"). I'm not sure where I fit in yet. People are just beginning to see I do exist >.< . Can't say if that is a good thing or a bad thing. At my school, there are preps and punks and geeks and all different kind of groups. I dont think I'm really in any of those groups...although I may be turning into a prep (save me before its too late). Heh. I dont like the labels, but most of the people I know consider it a compliment and try to live up to the labels.

Around here, I like to categorize the local mentality as 'lemmings.' Being on an island where everyone knows everyone's cousin, I guess it can't be helped when someone has something cool and it becomes the object of desire for another.

These lemmings can be seen driving Hondas(both teens and adults), purchasing new houses in the middle of nowhere, carrying Nokia brand cellphones(gotta have them programmable rings!), wearing aloha wear/slacks and getting excited over our pathetic excuse for a college football team.

As for me, guess I'm the non-conformist. Never got into fashion, automotive, music or other trends my friends/family were into. Always the rebel.
