Freeze, scumbag! Let's talk about L.A. Noire!

In here we talk about L.A. Noire, so we don't mess up "Ok, here we go."

Short and uninformative op because I'm drunk and playing fable 2.

Discuss!

I guess someone did their research. It was nice having an actual detective say "Yeah. That's about right."

He's right about finding stuff like cars, though. Couldn't just google it. But then again. Had it been THAT realistic the game would take ages. Sometimes a bit of realism has to go.

Edit: Clip contains spoilers. Mark it with it. It's Marriage Made in Heaven, the second case of Traffic.

The only thing that bothered me (realism wise) was how you could just commandeer any car on the street / start any parked and presumably locked car without the keys. I know it's a GTA holdover but still.

Just redid A Marriage Made in Heaven and got four stars, and I know exactly what I did wrong. Guess I can watch that video now.

Yes, you can.

Also. PS Store is now up, so it's possible to get the pre-order DLC. I'm getting a new case to play! Yaaay! Only had to press continue four times because an error occured (damn all the other people trying to get their hands on shit)

The DLC (wich I would recommend the L.A. Noire Rockstar Pass for, money saving) is currently one traffic case and a vice case (pre-orders), some suits and some sort of badge challenge. Future DLC will include another vice case and an arson case. All of these go on the rockstar pass. I also suspect we'll get a special Halloween DLC like RDR. And seeing that the burglary desk was cut from the game, I suspect we'll be seeing that some time in the future as well.

Apparently PS Store now has FF4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 too. But that's very unrelated.

FF4? I urge you to get it.
I would seriously fly to Norway just to play that on your PS3. Now that's motivation enough

Just got done with homicide and here's my verdict so far:

I don't like it.

At least not as much as everyone else seems to. In fact, if this keeps up, this game might just take the title of "most over-hyped game ever" from Okami.

When I started the game, I thought it looked quite promising and I was looking forward to getting harder cases so I could start actually using my brain to solve cases, but so far that hasn't been necessary. All you do is walk back and forth all over the crime scene or other areas of interest, making sure you cover every square meter and hit the A button when the controller rumbles (I think you can turn off the rumble and sound hints but then you'd just have to constantly tap the A button instead). If you have to interact with an item, the game will always tell you what to do. It's literally as if the tutorial never ends! It's still possible to miss an item, but that would only be because you weren't patient enough to comb the entire area thoroughly enough. It's just a test of patience, not skill or smarts.

Then there's the interrogation part. If you've been patient enough with the above step, you'll know when to select "lie." If you don't have any evidence that contradicts their statements, it's (with a couple of exceptions) been very easy to decide between "doubt" and "truth" so far (if they stare right at you, they're telling the truth; if they start looking down or to the side, they're lying). Also, I find Cole's reactions to my choices to be very unpredictable. When I select "doubt," I expect "I don't believe you" or you know, something like that, and Cole's like "TELL ME EVERYTHING YOU KNOW OR I'LL SHOOT YOU IN THE FACE!!!!!!" Something like that. The point is I'm supposed to be playing as Cole Phelps, but it doesn't feel like I have any control of his actions during interrogations, especially not when I hit the "doubt" button.

Also, I hate rubber band AI. During certain (but not all, I think) chases on foot, when you're getting closer to the suspect than the game expects you to be at that point, the suspect will suddenly start running a lot faster, but when the suspect is getting close to the place where you're supposed to catch up with him, he slows down. It's all scripted, and it could just as well have been another cutscene.

Things I like: The setting/city, the facial expression technology, the writing, the acting, Rusty, the captain.

Anyway, I heard things pick up after homicide (like, it'll be harder to tell "truth" from "doubt"), so I hope my opinion has changed by the time I finish the game. I still hope some actual thinking will be required to solve some of the later cases, not just patience with dull tasks and looking at facial expressions.

Those are some fair criticisms, and I felt much the same my first play through but I still found it quite fun. Vice does get a bit tougher, there were a couple of times where I got all questions wrong when interviewing someone and hand to quickly turn of the box before it saved as I wanted to do better. The cases get longer, and more involved, and they give you fewer hints. I once spent 45 minutes trying to figure out what I had done wrong when I eventually figured out I hadn't pressed A on a clue at the crime scene to examine it more as I didn't think it was relevant at the time.
