Tutorial/FAQ for OHWGers: How to start a new thread

Are you tired of always getting your posts ignored or your topics of discussion cut short because someone changed the subject without your permission? Then this tutorial is for you! In this tutorial I will do my best to teach you how to make a new thread (in The Asylum).

Q: What's a 'new thread'?
A: It's like a brand new 'Ok, Here we go.' (hereinafter OHWG) except smaller and with topicality rules. You might have accidentally wandered into one before when the last post made in The Asylum was actually made in a new thread and not in OHWG.

Starting a new thread in The Asylum is a simple task, but the new things that you will see on your way to creating your new thread might confuse or even anger you. Don't let this deter you — I will guide you through the process step by step.

Step 1: Go to the UFFSite forum's main page.

Q: Help, I'm lost!
A: This is most likely because you have OHWG set as your home page, and therefore do not know about the main page. That's okay; all you have to do is click on the link that says 'UFF Network Forums' near the upper left corner of the page and you will be taken to the main page.

Step 2: Click on the link that says 'The Asylum'. It's located to the left of the link leading to OHWG.

What you're seeing on your screen now is what's known as a list of threads inside a forum. You can click on any of these threads to read posts made by people outside OHWG. But that's not what we're here to do...

Step 3: Locate the 'new thread' button. You should be able to find it both above and below the list of threads, to the left.

Q: Help!
A: It looks like this: You can click on it.

Q: I still can't see it!
A: You're most likely suffering from New Thread Button Blindness (hereinafter NTBB). This is common among people who have been exposed to a single thread for a prolonged period of time. Try spending some time outside OHWG and your NTBB should eventually go away. If it doesn't, seek medical attention.

Step 4: Take a deep breath.

Step 5: Click on the 'New Thread' button.

Now, just pretend you're starting a new topic of discussion in OHWG. Everyone replying to your thread are expected to stay on topic, and your post almost certainly won't be ignored.

Step 6: Click on the 'Submit New Thread' button located where you'd normally find the 'Submit Reply' button.

Congratulations, you have now started a new thread in The Asylum! You can now move on to create threads in other forums, but be warned that the rules are stricter outside The Asylum, so unless you feel confident in your thread-making skills, I advise you to stay in The Asylum for a while.

Q: When I try to submit my new thread, I get an error! This never happens in OHWG!
A: This is most likely because you didn't give your new thread a title. Just write something in the text field labeled 'Title' directly above the message field.

Q: I made a new thread, but my post still got ignored!
A: Unfortunately, even making a new thread is no guarantee that your post will get the attention you want. If this happens, just keep your chin up and try again at another time.

Q: What is this? How did I end up here? I'm not interested in any of this, just tell me how to get back to OHWG already!
A: You're most likely here because the last post made in The Asylum was made in this thread and not in OHWG, and as such, you accidentally entered this thread from the main page. You can click here to go back to OHWG.

If you have any further questions, ask them here in this thread (don't be alarmed, the process of making a post in this thread is identical to making a new post in OHWG), and I will attempt to answer them.
