Square Enix called out on FF13 advert lies

AP | August 18, 2010

The UK Advertising Standards Authority has ruled that Square Enix deliberately misled gamers with their advertisements for Final Fantasy XIII in the UK by using footage from the Playstation 3 version of the game in adverts branded for the Xbox 360.

All the Final Fantasy XIII adverts for print, press and online in the UK were Xbox 360 exclusive, meaning they made absolutely no mention of the PS3 version of the blockbuster title. Despite that, the footage used in the ads was actually captured from the PS3 version.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) acted after recieving a complaint from a gamer who saw the ad and noted the difference between the footage in the advert and the reality when he put the game into his own Xbox 360. In his complaint to the ASA, he said the PS3 version of the game had better quality imagery than the Xbox 360 version. Our review over on RPG Site supports that claim.

The ASA then examined both versions of the game, and ruled that the PS3 version did indeed have a better quality of image - and banned the advert from ever being shown again.

A spokesperson for the ASA said "We noted that there was a discernible difference in the picture quality of the two - the PS3 image in video sequences appeared sharper and colours were more vivid than those of the XBOX 360. We considered that, because the ad promoted the game on the XBOX 360 platform, it should have featured footage derived from that console."

Square Enix, meanwhile, said they reckoned the average viewer wouldn't know the difference. Either way, the ESA's word is final. Unlucky.
