Final Fantasy Versus XIII Information Update
AP
| January 25, 2011
Following on from the events at last week's Square Enix First Production Department Premiere the Japanese gaming press are blowing out a ton of new information on the games shown off there - and we've got summaries, starting with Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
Battle Mechanics Information:
The game has a large amount of weapon variety. While some characters will be limited in what weapons they can use, leading man Noctis can use all types of weapons.
The young blonde-haired man shown in the trailer specializes in guns. He has exclusive access to third person shooter-style aiming controls - not even Noctis can control guns like this. Other characters just have a lock-on mechanic when using guns, which prevents aiming at enemy weak spots.
Magic will have different properties and effects depending on who casts the spell. It seems party members will all be significantly different in many ways.
The party members shown off in the trailer aren't the only ones - there are more - but the game won't have a large number of party members.
The battle screen in the final version of the game will show the character names.
Some aspects of how the HUD displays things in battle will probably change before the game is done.
Story & Field Gameplay Information:
Noctis shouldn't be considered as being "cool" - he's just a normal guy. He does think that he is strong, but he isn't as strong as he thinks.
The blonde gunslinger in the trailer is a friend of Noctis. The othre two characters are friends from his childhood - and the guy with the glasses fills a role similar to that of a tactician.
Nomura debunks some internet speculation that the character riding the dragon in the trailer is blond-haired leading lady Stella. He says he wouldn't show her in such a way, and the character on the Dragon is an enemy.
The party will contain three members, like Final Fantasy XIII. Members who are not in the current party will still comment on things in dialogue, though.
The natural wide-open spaces in the trailer similar to Final Fantasy XIII's Pulse will have progression of time - the sun will rise and set, day will turn to night.
You can ride airships, cars and Chocobos. You can also steal army vehicles to use to travel the world.
When someone in the trailer says "You're not fit to be King!" the line is not directed at Noctis in the final game.
On the Release Date:
Nomura encourages fans to "forget" about Versus for a little while, telling them that this year Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Final Fantasy Type-0 will both see a Japanese release. He also asks fans to be patient and try to understand that the team is working hard to try to create something very special.
It's suggested that more could show up on Final Fantasy Versus XIII at E3 2011 this coming June.
