Final Fantasy III DS comes to iPhone

AP | February 23, 2011

A few days ago Square Enix teased a release of Final Fantasy III for Apple's iOS - the operating system that runs iPhone and iPod Touch devices the world over - but fans were left wondering if it'd be a remake of the NES original, the long lost unreleased Wonderswan port, the DS version, or an all new port.

Square Enix has now confirmed that the rerelease is of the latest version of the game, Final Fantasy III DS. This week's issue of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu revealed that the iPhone version is a fully upgraded remake of the DS remake, which landed on that console back in 2006.

Famitsu reports that the visuals of the game have been fully upgraded to high resolution for the iPhone version, and the sound is also being updated from the synths that were used for the DS version.

It'll use an on-screen d-pad to control movement on the overworld, while battle controls are simply managed by tapping the battle options direct on the screen and then tapping the enemy you want to hit with said attack. The DS version was surprisingly light on touch screen gameplay, so this is actually an improvement!

The Monster Viewer Gallery, which was a newly added feature to the DS version of Final Fantasy III, has also been upgraded and been made easier to use in the iPhone version, Famitsu claims. It sounds like it's a full-blown port this time around! It's scheduled for release in March.

There's no word on a European or North American release, but if you had to ask us we'd be quick to point out that the iOS ports of titles like Final Fantasy I, Final Fantasy II and Secret of Mana have all made it West - and Square Enix have localized text and voice from Final Fantasy III DS sitting in their archives. It's probably coming.

Our sister site RPG Site reviewed Final Fantasy III DS way back around its 2006 release, and you can check out the original review through that link. We've also got a ton of concept artwork and screenshots of the game over in the Media Vault, so be sure to check them out!
